Our Needs

Miller Middle School originally opened in 1925 as Marshalltown High School and in the nearly 100 years since that time, the school has successfully served the community and been home to many generations of Bobcats.

But the education facilities, tools and expectations of a century ago present challenges for today’s students and teachers. The lengthy list of issues that are seen today at MMS include:

  • Classrooms that are too small and outdated

  • Tight entryways and corridors that fail to meet code

  • Narrow stairwells that do not meet code

  • Outdated mechanical systems and finishes

  • A main entrance that is too small to accommodate current enrollment

  • The elevator is outdated and unreliable, presenting challenges for those with disabilities

  • Ongoing moisture and water issues must be resolved

  • The administration area needs to be larger

  • The school nurse area is undersized

  • The media center needs to be reimagined to incorporate modern technology and learning

  • The commons area does not have space to allow for gathering before, during, and after school

  • Arrival and departure congestion

  • Inefficient parking

  • The courtyard is underutilized

  • Restrooms must be renovated

  • Locker room updates are needed

We invite anyone in the community who would like to see these issues first-hand to consider contacting MCSD to plan a visit or tour.
